Temptations – Matthew 4:1-11
In "Temptations," the artist adeptly depicts Jesus' deep spiritual journey as told in Matthew 4:1–11. With the twilight sky providing an ethereal glow that represents the seduction of temptation, Jesus is portrayed as alone, weary, and hungry as he stands at the edge of a cliff. But in the backdrop, just barely visible, is a menacing shadow that symbolizes the presence of Satan, the tempter, whose cunning words aim to mislead the weak.
Three temptations, each intended to take advantage of human frailty and undercut Jesus's holy destiny, are presented by Satan while Jesus battles inside. The first temptation takes the form of a hand pointing to a rock, signifying the attraction of meeting bodily demands miraculously. The artist depicts Jesus's determination to cling to God's message for nourishment in the face of temptation to indulge in worldly delights.
In the second temptation, Satan tempts Jesus to jump from a cliff to test God's protection and Jesus's faith. Here, the precarious edge represents how easily human nature can give in to careless behavior motivated by uncertainty and hopelessness. Jesus, however, does not waver or give in to the allure of show and spectacle.
Satan shows a vision of earthly kingdoms extending below, offering worshippers power and control. Jesus is portrayed holding his robe firmly in his left hand, signifying his unwavering devotion to the Father and his refusal to compromise his divine purpose for material gain. Jesus rejects the false promises of temporal power and authority and declares his loyalty to God alone, with his right hand raised in the air.
The picture captures the ageless conflict between light and dark, good and evil, as represented by Jesus's struggle with temptation, through a deft use of symbolism and arrangement. It is a moving reminder of the spiritual struggles that every person must endure and the value of holding fast to one's faith through hardship. Viewers are encouraged to consider how susceptible they are to temptation as they consider the scene and to find courage in Jesus's unshakable submission to the will of the divine.
